Bio:

Johanna Brock (pronouns she/they) is a Chicago-based teacher, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Brock has been teaching early childhood music, violin, piano, and audio engineering since 2016 in both private and group lesson settings, to students ages 3 to adult. A trained orchestral violist, Brock earned a BA in Music from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2005. Brock also loves languages, and in 2011 earned a Diploma in French from the Université de Lyon Lumière 2. As a performer, Brock takes inspiration from modern and canonical music for violin and violin and uses voice, synthesizers, viola, and audio samples to explore the boundaries between sound and linguistic meaning. Brock joined the Merit Early Childhood faculty in Fall 2024 and they are looking forward to sharing their love of music with families and students!

Favorite Musician:

My favorite musician of all time is JS Bach, because his music is so much fun to play! I also love Joanna Newsom, who’s lyrics and compositions are so wonderfully transporting.

Quote:
