Bio:
Renata Rangel is a vibrant Mexican-American percussionist and arts advocate from Chicago, Illinois. Her musical journey began at the age of 5 at the Merit School of Music and led her to study at Interlochen Arts Academy with Keith Aleo. These opportunities landed her at the University of Michigan, where she earned her degree in Percussion Performance under the tutelage of Doug Perkins and Ian Antonio, with a minor in Performing Arts Management and Entrepreneurship. Renata’s performance career has taken her across the United States and abroad, collaborating with composers and musicians in a wide range of settings. Highlights include premiering works by composer Michael Gordon on the East Coast with the University of Michigan Percussion Ensemble, collaborating on a new operatic work by Derek Bermel and Sandra Cisneros, and recording new works with composers in Europe. Beyond performance, Renata is passionate about arts leadership, equity, and access, a commitment shaped by her experience as a UMS 21st Century Artist Intern with the Berlin Philharmonic. Through her artistry and advocacy, she is dedicated to creating inclusive musical spaces and fostering meaningful community through percussion.
Favorite Song:
A song I have been playing on repeat recently is “I remember summer” by Marquis Hill. The vibraphone on this album/song has always been my favorite 😀 (Shoutout another Merit Alum!)
Quote:
“Music education opens doors for everyone and has the power to bring people together. Merit is the community where I grew up, and it played a meaningful role in shaping who I am today. I was fortunate to grow up in such a special and inspiring environment filled with amazing people and mentors, and I am grateful to now be able to give back and help continue that same sense of magic for others.”
