Celebrating a Successful Spring Recital with Emerging Artists Chicago

Students stand onstage in a recital hall holding

On Saturday, May 30, a sense of nervous excitement filled the intimate PianoForte Recital Hall as young musicians from Merit and Emerging Artists Chicago gathered for a special spring musical celebration. The cozy venue provided the perfect setting for an afternoon of music-making, with a stunning Fazioli grand piano taking center stage which seemingly beckoned students to share their artistry. As performers took turns warming up, quiet scales and snippets of familiar melodies drifted through the room while students anxiously awaited their moment in the spotlight. Once the concert began and the first notes rang out, the hall was transformed into a space of connection, confidence, and musical joy, showcasing repertoire ranging from beloved classics by Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, Chopin, and Liszt alongside other imaginative contemporary works.

As has become a tradition with Emerging Artists Chicago, several Merit students were invited to perform alongside those from the piano studio of Mio Nakamura as part of their continuing recital series. Pianists Olivia Han, Siying Guo, Terence Wang, and Shike (Ivan) Yang each delivered engaging performances that highlighted their technical development and musical expression. Violinist Diego Azpeitia brought energy and confidence to Vivaldi’s Concerto in A minor.  Their performances reflected not only hours of dedicated practice, but also the supportive learning environment that helps Merit students thrive both on and off the stage.

Merit is deeply grateful for our continued partnership with Emerging Artists Chicago and their support of young musicians through both financial assistance and meaningful performance opportunities. Experiences like the Spring Musical Celebration allow students to develop poise, refine their stage presence, and share their artistry with new audiences—important steps in their musical journeys. These opportunities help students move beyond the practice room and experience the joy of connecting with listeners through live performance.

A special thank you goes to the Merit faculty members who helped prepare these young artists for the stage including Elena Doubovitskaya, Mio Isoda-Hagle, and Ben Weber for their dedication, mentorship, and encouragement. We are proud of each student who performed and thankful for partners like Emerging Artists Chicago who help create pathways for young musicians to grow, collaborate, and shine.
