Bio:
Pianist, Ann Yi is a versatile soloist and chamber musician with a broad range of musical interests, ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. A dedicated champion of new music, Ann has performed extensively as a member of the Eco Ensemble, a new music ensemble-in-residence at UC Berkeley. She has also performed with San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the sfSoundGroup, Earplay, Ensemble Dal Niente, and the University of Chicago New Music Ensemble and has worked with composers such as Brian Ferneyhough, Kaija Saariaho, Sylvano Bussotti, Stefano Scodanibbio, Christopher Wendell Jones and many emerging composers of our time.
An active performer, Ann has given numerous premieres, including twelve preludes for piano commissioned to commemorate the 2012-13 centennial of the DePaul University School of Music. Her recordings of these preludes were released by DePaul University School of Music, in celebration of this anniversary. In 2017-2018, Ann served as the artist-in-residence at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and was featured twice in the concert series, ‘Sensoria: New and Experimental Music’. Among her solo performances include a world premiere performance of new works for piano and electronics, which were created for her by UWM faculty and student composers. Ann was also featured as a soloist with U.C. Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Stanford Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble 20+, and numerously with the Eco Ensemble, including a performance of the monumental “Bird Concerto with Pianosong” by Jonathan Harvey. Ann appeared at the Venice Music Biennale Festival in Italy, in which her performances were broadcast live on Radio 3, Cartellone, Italy. Other appearances include the MANCA New Music Festival in France, the Festival Internacional Chihuahua in Mexico, the Ear Taxi Festival in Chicago, Old First Concerts in San Francisco, Cal Performances at U.C. Berkeley, Festival of New American Music at CSU Sacramento, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Latino Music Festival at University of Chicago, Music from the Edge New Music Festival at Stanford University, New Music DePaul, the Frequency Series at Constellation in Chicago, the June in Buffalo Festival in New York, among others.
Ann has recorded for the Innova, Tzadik, and New Focus Recordings labels. Ann received a Doctor of Music and Master of Music from Indiana University Bloomington and a Bachelor of music from San José State University. A dedicated teacher, Ann is on the faculty at Harold Washington College, DePaul University School of Music, and the Merit School of Music.
