Whether your child is 4 or 18 years old, a beginner or looking to refine their skills, Merit’s group classes will help unlock their full musical potential.

Merit School of Music’s group classes, also known as our Instrumental & Vocal Music Program, provide beginning and intermediate level musicians with the opportunity to grow through music.

Our small group environment provides ample opportunity for group learning and individual support. Students gain knowledge in instrumental technique, musical knowledge, and musical skills, all while maturing personally and educationally. Music classes accelerate cognitive development, give kids and teens a creative outlet, and the opportunity to forge friendships with music-loving peers from across Chicagoland.

CLASS IS FULL June 25 • 10:00am – 12:45pm (Ages 8-13) & 11:45am – 12:45pm (Ages 4-13)

Have a music-loving child who isn’t quite sure which instrument to choose? The best way to pick is by trying them all! This fun introductory class is designed to give young music lovers the chance to explore various instruments—piano, violin, trumpet, guitar, flute, voice, & many more!

Children ages 8-13 will begin the day with a session on wind and brass instruments and guitar. Younger kids are invited to join us for the second part of the session as we explore strings, piano, and voice. Students will end the session by choosing their favorite instrument and will have the opportunity to reserve a spot in Merit’s popular fall group classes and ensembles.

It’s time to make some music this summer! Our Beginning Guitar class gives aspiring student musicians a creative outlet and is a fun way to learn to read music and build strong practice habits. Your child will begin strumming in a twice-weekly group class of five to eight students with ample opportunity for group learning and individual support.

Students will learn the following skills:

  • Identifying the parts of the musical staff
  • Reading notes and rhythms
  • Playing scales, arpeggios, and chords in 1st and 2nd position
  • Tuning a guitar

Learn piano with Merit this summer! Piano gives aspiring student musicians a creative outlet and is a fun way to learn to read music and build strong practice habits. Your child will begin playing in a class of five to six students with ample opportunity for group learning and individual support. Students will practice reading music, defining basic vocabulary terms, and performing a variety of pieces.

Students will learn the following skills:

  • Recognizing parts of the musical staff
  • Reading rhythms and notes in treble and bass clefs
  • Maintaining proper posture and hand position

Merit’s Beginning Suzuki-Alegre Cello classes focus on the foundations of proper string technique, basic musical concepts, and performance skills in a small group setting that works in harmony with the student’s private lesson routine. Suzuki-Alegre students benefit from the pairing of the Suzuki method with a diverse array of music from Latinx culture.

Students will learn the following skills:

  • Proper posture and hand position
  • Critical listening skills
  • How to produce a clear, consistent tone

Students enrolling in this class must also sign up for summer private lessons through Merit. More information on private lessons can be found here.
