\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tYoung musicians generally develop their talents and hone their skills individually or in ensembles, preparing for performances in auditoriums and concert halls designed for hearing music. But what happens when they need to collaborate with artists from other disciplines (shall we say, dance?) and perform in spaces not built with music in mind? \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

That is exactly what Sofiia and a group of fellow Alice S. Pfaelzer Conservatory<\/a><\/strong> students experienced during November\u2019s collaborative performance with Ballet Chicago<\/a><\/strong>. During DanceVision Chicago, Merit students accompanied student ballet dancers and put their musicianship to the test through this new challenge, navigating deeper levels of collaboration, leadership, and flexibility.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHaving stretched their collaboration and leadership abilities, it was now time to strengthen their acoustical ear. Sofiia excitedly described how different the Grand Army of the Republic Hall and Rotunda at the Chicago Cultural Center were compared to her familiar rehearsal space in Gottlieb Hall. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

With sound resonating throughout the space and bouncing off the large glass windows, she noted, \u201cIt\u2019s actually sometimes hard, because the sound is delayed and it\u2019s hard to stay together with the delay. There is nothing that can consume the sound.\u201d Yet adapting in the moment is the job of a collaborative musician\u2014and so the Conservatory students did just that, communicating with the dancers through nonverbal cues to maintain timing and create a beautiful performance. Despite the dynamic environment, Sofiia conveyed her joy and sense of wonder: \u201cIt was so beautiful there! It was a huge hall with a lot of echo. It\u2019s really loud outside [on Michigan Ave.], but it\u2019s really quiet inside, and there\u2019s a huge Tiffany dome. It feels something like heaven.\u201d<\/p>

With DanceVision 2025 now in the books\u2014and recorded as a stunning performance blending the talents of two art forms\u2014we are so proud of Sofiia and her fellow musicians (and dancers!) for their exceptional work. Reflecting on everything she learned, Sofiia remarked, \u201cIt\u2019s an investment in our future. It\u2019s a really good opportunity for young people to try something new they have never done before.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
