\u2018Tis the season for performing! This time of year is often packed with concerts and recitals. We love to see young student musicians showing off new skills and giving life to the pieces they\u2019ve been working on so hard over the past few months.<\/strong><\/h3>
\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>

In fact, performances<\/a><\/strong> are one of the most exciting parts of the Merit School of Music experience. They provide music students with the chance to apply what they\u2019ve learned, gain confidence as they share their gifts with others, and\u2014when performing in an ensemble<\/a>,<\/strong> duet or chamber group\u2014build communication and teamwork skills while bonding with their peers.<\/p>

As your music-lover prepares to sing their heart out or nail that flute solo, we\u2019ve put together a few tips from Merit\u2019s expert faculty<\/strong><\/a> and Conservatory students<\/a> <\/strong>to help them shine on stage.<\/p>

\"\"Terry Henderson<\/strong><\/a>, Faculty: Voice<\/strong><\/p>

Tip #1<\/strong> \u201cRemember, as a singer your entire body is your instrument. Stretch, take deep breaths, and make sure you are prepared.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #2<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cOwn your stage and your moment, and trust yourself that you’ve done the work and you are prepared.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #3<\/strong> \u201cNo performance is perfect, don’t be too hard on yourself\u2014as performers we will always want to [be perfect].\u201d<\/p>

Madison, Flute student<\/strong><\/h3>

Tip #4 <\/strong>\u201cI first take a moment. I don\u2019t really meditate but I take a moment, relax myself, and tell myself: \u2018Everything\u2019s gonna be okay.\u2019\u201d<\/p>

Tip #5<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIf you mess up, don\u2019t worry about it. When you mess up or if you mess up, don\u2019t make it noticeable. Just keep playing! Whatever you do, just keep playing.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #6<\/strong> \u201cPlay your heart out. Don\u2019t let anyone make you nervous because the only person that makes you nervous is yourself.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Tip #7<\/strong> \u201cBeside basic breathing techniques (take deep breaths!), I like to disconnect from whatever\u2019s going on. So, go to whatever your favorite thing is: Listen to your favorite song, look at your favorite show for a minute, look at something that makes you laugh or gets a little bit of your energy out. That way you get a little bit of that anxiousness out.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #8<\/strong> \u201cPractice! And make sure to tune your instrument.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #9<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cBreath it out. I use lots of breathing, and a lot of visualizing and meditation.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #10<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cAnd a little party dance! I recommend listening to hype music\u2014I actually got that from one of our students!\u201d<\/p>

Tip #11<\/strong> \u201cAlso, lots of water and make sure to eat well before the performance.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #14<\/strong> \u201cSing! Sing your part without even having your instrument in your hand so you visualize it in your head, just like golfers do practice swings before they actually hit the ball or [basketball players] with free throws. You have to visualize it and be in that head space\u2014which is also good for focusing to block everything else out.\u201d<\/p>

Tip #15<\/strong> \u201cAnd remember that you\u2019re sharing something that\u2019s really happy\u2014just like you\u2019re not going to be afraid to share your favorite ice cream with somebody because it\u2019s your favorite thing.\u201d<\/p>
