Music Classes and Lessons
Merit School of Music offers a full range of music classes and lessons for children and adults. In addition to instrumental and vocal instruction, our students have the opportunity to practice and perform in chamber music ensembles, jazz ensembles, and Latin inspired string ensembles.
Our programs are offered on-site at our Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and also at 30 off-site locations through our Merit Music in Communities program.
Early Childhood Classes
For ages: Newborn – 7 yrs
Level: beginner, no experience needed
Courses: Early Childhood weekly group classes
Schedule: Three 10-week sessions throughout the academic year and one 7-week session in the summer.
Instrumental & Vocal Music (Group Classes)
For grades: K – 9th
Level: beginner – intermediate, no experience needed for beginning classes, placement audition required for intermediate classes.
Courses: Weekly group classes for piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, percussion (drums), trombone, trumpet, french horn, tuba, violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar and voice.
Schedule: Weekly evening classes for 29 week during the academic year and 7 weeks in the summer.
For grades: 7th – 12th
Level: High intermediate – advanced (acceptance by audition only).
Courses: Advanced ensembles and musical courses designed to assist students in achieving a high level of success on their instrument
Schedule: Classes meet all-day Saturday for 26 weeks during the academic year. Summer schedules varies.
For ages: 4 and up depending on instrument
Level: Beginner – advanced
Courses: one-on-one private instruction
Schedule: Classes meet once per week depending on instructor and student availability
