City Winery is proud to present Nico Segal and The JuJu Exchange on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at a Benefit Concert for Merit School of Music located in the West Loop and serving nearly 5,000 Chicago-area youth by removing barriers to high-quality music education.
The JuJu Exchange band members trumpeter Nico Segal, pianist Julian Reid and his brother, drummer Everett Reid, as well as bassist and Segal’s Kids These Days bandmate Lane Beckstrom, are all Merit alums who attended between 1998 and 2013, three of whom graduated from Merit’s Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory. They attribute their music and personal success to the exceptional training they received at Merit.
With one foot in Jazz and the other foot in everything else, The JuJu Exchange is a musical partnership of childhood friends who came up through Chicago Public School music programs and Merit School of Music. Nico Segal, Julian & Everett Reid and Lane Beckstrom use The JuJu Exchange as a way to build off of their past experiences in order to make a genre-bending style of music that looks to the future while dealing with the problems of the present. Drawing from hip-hop, jazz, classical and pop music, The JuJu Exchange will take you where anything is possible.
“It is important to us as a band to give back to the city that nourished us and see Merit and programs like it continue to push creative youth in the most positive way. This show will help kids get scholarships and mentorships that will inspire them to be the best they can be musically and otherwise. We need this creative outlet now more than ever. Support Merit! Support Chicago Public Schools! Support the arts programs!!” – Nico Segal
