Chamber Ensembles Reach M-PRIZE Semi-Finals!


Earlier this month, five Merit chamber ensembles were named semi-finalists of the M-PRIZE international chamber arts competition at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre, & Dance.

Four of the ensembles–Precipice Saxophone Quartet, Purple Hippopotami Flute Quartet, The Bone Rangers, and Visceral Brass Quintet–are participating in the Junior Winds division and competing for a combined $10,000 in prize money.

Last year, The Bone Rangers took second place in their division behind their Merit classmates, the KGT wind ensemble.


Precipice Saxophone Quartet:
Abraham Martinez, Cole Moorhead, Emmett Connolly, Taki Salameh
Purple Hippopotami Flute Quartet: Sofia Frumkin, Natasha Kozintseva, Michael Mackoff, Elias Nava


The Bone Rangers: Karl Kirkpatrick, Omar Tlatelpa-Nieto, Jonah Blaek, Rafael Noriega
Visceral Brass Quintet: Jake Nitzsche, Aidan Power, Jaila Carr, Daniel Johnson, Joseph Sullivan
















The fifth Merit ensemble–Sticks and Stones, a percussion group–are participating in the Junior Open division and pursuing a share of the $10,000 also up for grabs in that competition category.

The finals will take place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, beginning Friday, May 4 and concluding by Sunday, May 6 at 7 pm EST. All rounds competition will be live-streamed on Detroit Public Television.
