Choosing music as a career was a natural choice for trumpeter Paul Lowry, who grew up in a musical family and was constantly surrounded by music. In preparation, he earned a Bachelor of Music in trumpet performance from West Virginia University, and a Master of Music in trumpet performance from Florida State University.
As an instructor, Mr. Lowry recognizes the unique personality traits of each student. He enjoys the challenge of communicating the fundamentals of playing the trumpet to the highest standard in a way that is meaningful to each individual student.
A member of the Merit faculty since 2008 and chair of the brass department, he teaches trumpet for the Conservatory and the Merit Honors Trumpet Ensemble, along with instrumental music classes and private lessons. Mr. Lowry was named the Tom and Sue Pick trumpet chair, in recognition of his outstanding musical accomplishments. Before coming to Merit, he was a trumpet instructor for VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, North Florida Community College and Florida State University.
In addition to his teaching career, Mr. Lowry maintains an active performance career in Chicago and the surrounding area. He has performed with such groups as the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Ballet and the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, among many other orchestras in the region.
“Merit understands the role music plays in the lives of people and, more specifically, children.”
