On Saturday, October 28, Solo Voice students from the Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory were treated to a nearly two-hour masterclass led by decorated classical baritone Thomas Hampson.
Mr. Hampson provided insights into the confidence and self-assuredness required of singers, the challenges associated with removing oneself from the emotionality of performance, and the difference in approach and tonality across genres.
Additionally, Mr. Hampson worked one-on-one with students Henry Lunn and Alejandro Partida, offering each almost thirty minutes of individualized instruction live before an audience of students, faculty, staff, and supporters. A masterclass by a renowned artist like Mr. Hampson is an especially unique opportunity for Merit musicians to grow in their craft. Merit is grateful for his time, energy, and expertise.
Thomas Hampson is an opera singer, recording artist, Grammy and Edison Award winner, highly decorated performer and teacher, and the founder of the Hampsong Foundation. For more on Mr. Hampson, visit his website.
