“Being part of something bigger” is a size-appropriate response for a tuba player. Tuba and euphonium instructor Scott Tegge offers this response when asked what drew him to music. The Director of Merit’s Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, Mr. Tegge teaches technique classes along with private lessons.
Within two years of Mr. Tegge joining the Merit faculty in 2008, the school’s tuba-euphonium studio tripled its student enrollment. He takes a very direct approach with students and like to inject a little fun into his lessons. While at Merit, Mr. Tegge has launched a week-long tuba-euphonium summer camp and an advanced tuba-euphonium quartet for top-level high school students.
In addition to Merit, Mr. Tegge teaches at the University of Illinois at Chicago, North Central College, DePaul University, and at Carthage College in Wisconsin. He coaches chamber music at Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, and has taught master classes on brass chamber music at Juilliard and Eastman School of Music, among others. He holds a Bachelor of Music in tuba performance from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music in tuba performance from the University of Miami.
In 2004, Mr. Tegge co-founded the Gaudete Brass Quintet, which is devoted to presenting serious brass chamber music and encouraging worldwide appreciation of the art through live performances, recordings, education, and the creation of new works. Among his career highlights is touring Japan as a soloist with the Carthage College Wind Orchestra.
“Music is meant to be fun.”
